Mice. Magical fairies. And founding fathers? The Rock School for Dance Education proudly presents its annual “Nutcracker 1776” – a family-friendly, history-filled take on the traditional holiday ballet – on Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Merriam Theater in Center City, and on Saturday and Sunday, December 14 and 15, at the Haverford School on the Main Line.
Against the backdrop of Revolutionary-era Philadelphia, the story ballet – set to Tchaikovsky’s beloved score – follows two children entrusted with a magical Nutcracker. The young adventurers embark on an enchanted journey, meeting such colorful characters as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and General Mouse Howe.
This 70-minute ballet features a cast of 200 Rock School students [including the School’s professional-track dancers] hailing from all over the world, under the artistic direction of Bojan Spassoff and Stephanie Wolf Spassoff.
