Learn how to budget your money!

Many many years ago (when I was 9 or so) my father gave me the best advice when it came to money. He said "Save More, Spend less, & Save wisely". I didn't quite understand what that meant until he took me to Walgreens and had me wait in line with him with coupons and a quarter. I looked up at him confused because he had a 4 bottles of juice, a bag of sugar, and 4 cans of soup but only a quarter? It was then when I witnessed him use coupons! I was hooked at that very moment. My mom worked for a psychiatric hospital so I spent a lot of time with my dad. My dad couldn't work due to a horrific car accident a few years prior so he saved every penny he had. I learned my frugal ways from my dad and my diy crafty ways from my mom. She was like McGyver 2.0! If you needed something fixed, she was your go to person. My dad would go to the store everyday after he picked me up from school and we'd grab a good amount of groceries or household items for under $10. I'm going to share with all of you how I budget and how you could too!

How to budget:

  1. Write down all of your monthly expenses
  2. Write down the amount of income coming in
  3. Set aside a set amount to spend each week

I use a notebook and write everything out as shown below with dates they are due.

  • Cell Phone
  • Electric Bill
  • Gas Bill
  • Groceries
  • Gas (car)
  • Miscellaneous (Ipsy, Julep, WWE Network, Personal spending)

  • Rent
  • Cable
  • Groceries
  • Gas (car)
  • Miscellaneous (HuluPlus, Netflix, Personal spending)
Set an amount for you to set aside for yourself to buy a few household items. When you are starting your budget, use only cash for personal expenses. It will help you spend less.
Next you're found to create a meal plan depending on what's on sale for that week and don't forget to match coupons with the sale prices. If you get into this routine, you'll start saving some money. You want to put the money that is left over after all of your expenses into your savings account. You want to do this every time you have income coming in. The money in your savings will get interest. I recommend using notebooks and a planner to set up your budget.  The things you want to keep in mind is that you adjust the budget to where you'd understand. Make it your own. I set aside $20 for weekly couponing trips. Whatever is left over from that week, I deposit into my savings or carry it over to the next week. My grocery budget is $150 biweekly. Whatever is left over from that,  I put it towards my next grocery trip or put it into my savings. You'll slowly start to see the change and notice how much you're saving. If it helps, put your budget and expenses into your Google calendar or any other mobile calendar you may use. It'll help you see what goes in and what's goes out. Happy budgeting!

Dr. Suess' Birthday is coming up! Get 5 books for $5.95 + a Free gift!

"You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read with a child." - Dr. Seuss
Dr. Seuss’ 111th birthday is on March 2nd, and there's so much to celebrate! Dr. Seuss has captured the hearts of the young and old with his whimsical rhymes, imaginative illustrations and zany characters. A child is never too young to introduce Dr. Seuss' poetic meter. Reading to babies and young children helps with brain development and fosters a bonding experience with families.  Dr. Seuss mastered the repetition of sound throughout his stories, which makes his books perfect for beginner readers learning to connect sounds and letters to form words and sentences. Wacky plots and tongue twisters make his books thoroughly entertaining, inspires creative thinking and promotes pre-reading skills. Dr. Seuss' stories, such as The Lorax, also teach valuable life lessons; whether it's about responsibility for the environment, never giving up, or being true to yourself.

Celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday with a FREE gift! Every new member will receive a free Dr. Seuss Reading & Growth chart for a limited time with promo code “BIRTHDAY”.

The Reading & Growth chart comes with Dr. Seuss stickers to personalize your child’s name and the Dr. Seuss books he or she has read. Don't miss out on this terrific keepsake and fantastic Dr. Seuss books at a great value.
Show young readers how they can grow with books! Record reading milestones while you mark your child's growth inch by inch.

Take a stand against Bullying!

Being the mother to a teenager who starts high school next year, my biggest fear is bullying. She was bullied in elementary which prompted me to put her in private school for middle school but private school for high school is a bit out of my budget so she is headed to public school. Bullying is one of the biggest issues and as a parent, it is my responsibility to educate others and protect my children.  We have to remember that our children look to us for approval. They lead by example. So if we are giving them bad examples, they will lead the wrong way and think what is bad is actually good. I cannot stress enough how bad bullying is high school. I've witness it and still do when I'm taking my kids to school in the morning. If you have a chance to help a child out (or in adult in some cases) please do so. Every little bit counts. A while ago I saw the movie Bully with my children. I cried from beginning to end. The things that those children endured from day to day at school was horrific and completely unacceptable. I feel the pain of their parents. My daughter was only 9 years old when it all began. I started to notice a pattern in her that was out of the ordinary. She ate less, wasn't as upbeat, and stopped reading books. She was isolating herself. I asked her what was wrong and she told me. My heart broke. I will not repeat the things that were done or said to her because she is a lively 13 1/2 year old and I do not want her to relive those moments. I know you're wondering where this is coming from and I just want to say that it is coming from my heart. I usually post about deals but I think it's time to focus on our future generation. I'll occasionally post things about this or other topics. I will still post deals and ad previews and so on but I'm turning this into a universal blog and I welcome you all to come and talk. You never know who you might meet here. Back to the subject at hand-Bullying. I came across a trailer to a new movie coming out in theaters March 27th. I could not put into words how I felt after watching it. Take a look at the trailer below.

Let me give you a quick synopsis of the movie:
Sophomore year has been a nightmare for Jessica Burns. Relentlessly harassed by her former friend Avery Keller, Jessica doesn't know what she did to deserve the abuse from one of South Brookdale High's most popular and beautiful students. But when a shocking event changes both of their lives, a documentary film crew, a hidden digital camera, and the attention of a reeling community begin to reveal the powerful truth about A Girl Like Her.
There is an organization that Stephen Amell donated to and it is one that is near and dear to my heart. I donate when I can and buy merchandise from them often. They are called Stand for the Silent. This was formed by 2 parents that lost their so in 2010 to suicide because he was being bullied and wanted to escape it. His name is Ty Smalley. His parents travel across the US to educate schools about the seriousness of bullying. These children need to know that they are somebody! Ty Smalley was only 11 years old when he took his life. Did you know that every 7 seconds, a child is bullied? EVERY 7 SECONDS! They have reached 1,021,000 Kids in 1,004 Schools! Aside from this you can download a PDF from A Girl like her to promote peace. It's called "The PEACEkeeper Kit". It is an educational tool for students, teachers and administrators to transform their schools and communities into PEACE ZONES through an enforceable commitment to redefine social behaviors and conflict resolution methods. Students will lead this revolutionary transformation through simple, step-by-step instructional and supportive materials, including a PEACE PLEDGE and PEACE CONTRACT, which emphasizes healing over punishment
