Update on Which Stores Will Be Open/Closed on Thanksgiving!

by - November 12, 2015

I have a final list of which stores are open/closed on Thanksgiving. Each year, stores lure customers in with their impressive door-busters. While some stores have promised to stay closed on Thanksgiving, others have held on to their 4 year old tradition in opening on Thanksgiving. The only change is that the store hours keep getting earlier and earlier.

REI announced it would remain closed on Black Friday, giving its employees a paid holiday to "opt outdoors" with their families. An estimated 134 million people shopped online and in stores over Thanksgiving weekend in 2014, the National Retail Federation found. Black Friday is the busiest day of the weekend, with 87 million shoppers making purchases.

Want to know why it's called Black Friday?

The day's name originated in Philadelphia, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. Use of the term started before 1961 and began to see broader use outside Philadelphia around 1975. Later an alternative explanation was made: that retailers traditionally operated at a financial loss ("in the red") from January through November, and "Black Friday" indicates the point at which retailers begin to turn a profit, or "in the black".
