DIY Vanilla Lip Scrub!

My daughter has been hounding me to take her to Lush in the King of Prussia Mall. The problem is, is that the specific mall where Lush is located in is about an hour and a half away. It quite a trip to take and right now between her soccer practices, games, my job, my son, and with school starting next week, it has been really hard to even get out. We both have been wanting to buy a lip scrub so we decided to make one! We had all of the ingredients in the house to make one.

One of the ingredients I used was coconut oil. You need two basic elements for your lip scrub: oil and sugar. The oils moisturize while the sugar crystals exfoliate. You can find hundreds of recipes on the internet on how to make lip scrubs. I decided to just wing it and make my own because I knew first hand what was needed to moisturize and exfoliate. This lip scrub has only 3 ingredients but you can use substitutes. I used coconut oil, white sugar, and pure vanilla extract. You could use brown sugar, or substitute the coconut oil with olive oil, jojoba oil or almond oil. If you want, you could combine all 3 oils into the scrub. The vanilla just adds a nice smell and flavor since this lip scrub is edible.

Ingredients:
  • 2 Tablespoons white sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1/8 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (4 drops)
In a small bowl, combine the three ingredients and mix thoroughly. The sugar should be completely moist like fine wet sand. You can always add a bit more oil to achieve the ideal consistency, or if it ever dries out.

Transfer your scrub to a small jar or whatever jar you’d like to store it in. I chose to store mine in a stack-able pill container. It's easier to see when I'm running low. I would suggest you keep it in a place that is at room temperature since coconut oil does become a liquid when heated or when left in direct sunlight. I have mine in the refrigerator, it makes it into a good mix, not much of a solid but I could always leave it out when I need to use it.

To Use:

Moisten lips with warm water. Use a pea-size ball of scrub and gently rub it across your lips like seen in the picture below. You can remove the scrub by licking it off since it is edible, rinsing it off directly with warm water or rubbing it off with a wet wash cloth for a bit of bonus exfoliation.

Have you made your own lip scrub? If you haven't, try my recipe and let me know how you like it!
